Main Door Vastu: The 32 Entrance Padas Explained
Main door Vastu: the 32 entrance positions, and which ones to avoid
"Our front door faces south. Is that bad?" is the question we are asked most, and the honest answer is that the question is too coarse. A south wall is eight positions long. Two of them are among the best places on the whole building for an entrance, and three are among the worst.
How the positions are counted
Stand outside the building and walk round it clockwise, starting at the north-west corner. Every wall is cut into eight equal lengths.
| Wall | Positions | Runs from | To |
|---|---|---|---|
| North | N1 – N8 | North-west corner | North-east corner |
| East | E1 – E8 | North-east corner | South-east corner |
| South | S1 – S8 | South-east corner | South-west corner |
| West | W1 – W8 | South-west corner | North-west corner |
Each position spans 11.25 degrees of the compass, so the thirty-two together make the full circle. A door usually covers one position, sometimes two. When it straddles two, judge it by the one its centre falls in.
The good positions
On every wall, the third and fourth position carry the entrance well.
| Position | Zone behind it | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| N3 | North-north-west | Good |
| N4 | North | Good |
| E3 | East-north-east | Good |
| E4 | East | Good |
| S3 | South-south-east | Good |
| S4 | South | Good |
| W3 | West-south-west | Good |
| W4 | West | Good |
That is why a south door can be a good door. S3 and S4 sit in the fire zones of confidence and recognition, and an entrance there is in its proper place.
The positions to avoid
| Position | Zone behind it | Why it is avoided |
|---|---|---|
| N6, N7 | North-north-east | The zone of health, which wants to stay clean and quiet |
| N8, E1 | North-east | The most sensitive zone, meant to stay quiet and open |
| E6, E7 | East-south-east | The zone of churning and overthinking |
| S6, S7 | South-south-west | The zone of disposal, which suits what leaves, not what arrives |
| S8, W1 | South-west | The zone of stability, which wants a solid wall |
| W6, W7 | West-north-west | The zone of letting go |
The remaining positions, the first, second, fifth and the last on each wall (N1, N2, N5, E2, E5, E8, S1, S2, S5, W2, W5, W8), are neither good nor bad. A door there is acceptable and needs nothing done to it.
How to find which position your door is in
You need the building's true bearing, not the compass on your phone held against a radiator. The free Direction Finder takes the bearing from a satellite view of your roof. Mark your front door on the plan and the free report names the zone, the position and the verdict for it.
If you would rather measure on site, stand inside with your back to the door, take a compass reading away from metal, and add 180 degrees. Then count positions from the north-west corner at 11.25 degrees each.
The correction for a door in the wrong position
Nobody is asked to move a front door. The practice corrects it at the threshold: a 3-inch strip of tape, or a metal strip, laid across the full width of the threshold from one wall to the other, in the colour or metal of the zone the door sits in.
| Door in | Tape colour | Or a strip of |
|---|---|---|
| North-north-east, north-east | Blue | Aluminium |
| East-south-east | Red or orange | Copper |
| South-south-west, south-west | Yellow | Brass or lead |
| West-north-west | White | Stainless steel |
The strip goes under or into the threshold, where it is walked over every time the door is used. Tape is the quick version; metal is the permanent one.
What not to do
Do not paint the door a colour you read about for "your" direction without knowing the position. Do not hang anything over the door to "block" it. A door in a good position is simply left alone, and that is most front doors.
If a road runs straight at your door, that is a separate question. A T-junction is judged by the position it strikes, in the same way, and has its own correction. It is covered in T-junctions, corner plots and the roads around you.
Where this sits in the whole picture
The entrance is one of the first things a reading checks, because it is the one opening every person and every delivery passes through. The zone it opens into is described in full in the sixteen Vastu zones.
