The West Zone in Vastu: Dining, Gains and Space
The west zone: where the day's work is gathered in
The sun sets in the west, and the tradition reads the zone the way the end of a working day feels: the point where what was done is collected and enjoyed. It is a forgiving zone. Much of what goes wrong elsewhere sits comfortably here.
What the zone is
| Direction | West, 11.25° either side of 270° |
|---|---|
| Element | Space |
| Governs | Gains, profits and fulfilment |
| Wants | Dining, keeping, rest; white and grey tones |
| Fails when | It holds a toilet, or its walls are red or green |
Its neighbours are west-south-west, the zone of education and study, and west-north-west, the zone of letting go. The three together make up most of the western side of the plan.
What belongs here
The dining table. Eating together is the clearest picture of gathering in what the day produced, and the west is its natural home.
A safe or locker. Things that are kept rather than spent sit well in the west.
A bedroom. The west is one of the good zones for sleep, alongside the south, the south-west and the north-west.
The staircase and an overhead water tank. Both are heavy, and the west carries weight without complaint.
The kitchen. Less expected, but the west is an acceptable place for a kitchen when the south-east is not available.
A single brass eagle is the traditional object for the zone, if you want one. It is optional. The zone is set right by what occupies it, not by what hangs on its wall.
Colours
| Right for the west | Avoid in the west |
|---|---|
| White, off-white, light grey, silver | Red, green |
A white or silver main gate suits a west-facing entrance. The zone's metal is stainless steel and its tape colour is white, which is what the corrections below use.
The two common faults
A toilet in the west. The correction is a 3-inch white tape, or a stainless-steel strip, laid on the floor on three sides of the toilet seat. Nothing is demolished.
Red or green walls. Repaint in the zone's own tones when the room is next decorated. Until then, keep large red or green objects out of the zone.
The west door
A front door on the west wall is judged by its position, like every door. W3 and W4 are good. W1 sits in the south-west and W6 and W7 sit in the west-north-west, and those are the ones to avoid. The full method is in main door Vastu and the 32 entrance positions.
Where this sits in the whole picture
The west is calm in most buildings because modern houses tend to put the living and dining rooms at the back, and the back is often the west. Check the north-west next, which is lighter and easier to get wrong: the north-west zone. The whole set is in the sixteen Vastu zones.
