Staircase Vastu: Where Stairs Belong, and the Fix

Staircase Vastu: where the stairs belong, and what to do when they do not

Nobody chooses where their stairs go. They came with the house, and in a British terrace they are nearly always against the party wall, wherever that happens to fall. Vastu does not ask you to move them. It asks you to know which zone they stand in, and to mark them if it is the wrong one.

The zones that suit a staircase

Zone Verdict
South Good
South-west Good
West-south-west Good
West Good
West-north-west Good

These five zones carry weight well. A staircase in any of them is in its proper place and needs nothing.

The zones to keep it out of

Zone Why
North, north-north-east, north-east, north-north-west Water zones, meant to stay light and low
East-north-east, east, east-south-east Air zones of growth and connection, which want openness and morning light
South-east, south-south-east Fire zones, which want the stove and the electrics, not mass
South-south-west The zone of disposal, which suits what leaves rather than what stays
North-west The zone of movement and support, which wants to stay light
The centre (Brahmasthan) The heart of the plan, meant to stay open

The corrections

The practice's correction is tape on the floor under the first and the last step, in the colour of the zone the staircase stands in.

Staircase in Correction
North Blue tape under the first and last step, with brass pyramids or brass wire set under the staircase
North-east Yellow tape under the first and last step, with brass pyramids or brass wire set under the staircase
East Green tape under the first and last step
South-east Red or orange tape under the first and last step
The centre Mark the edge of the Brahmasthan with yellow tape or brass wire
Any other zone on the list above The zone's own tape colour, 3 inches wide, on the floor all the way round the foot of the staircase

The tape can go under a stair runner or a mat where it will not be seen. It does its job by being there, not by being on show.

What not to do

Do not store heavy things under a staircase that stands in the north or north-east. The space under the stairs is the first place a household fills, and in those zones it doubles the fault. Use the space for the brass the correction asks for and keep the rest of it clear.

Do not rebuild a staircase on the strength of a blog post. Moving stairs is structural work, and the correction above exists so that it is never needed.

Where this sits in the whole picture

A staircase is one of the structural things a reading cannot change, along with the walls and the windows. The approach to all of them is the same, and it is set out in Vastu remedies without demolition. For a staircase in the middle of the house, read the Brahmasthan first.
