Space Clearing After a Death or a Hard Tenancy

Space clearing after a bereavement or a difficult tenancy

This post is written for people who may be reading it at a difficult time, so it is going to be plain and it is not going to oversell anything.

If you have just lost someone

There is no hurry.

The strongest advice we give, and we give it before anything about clearing, is that there is no correct timetable for dealing with a home after a death. People are told to sort the house out quickly, or told they are moving too fast, usually by someone who means well.

Nothing in this post needs to be done this month. A room left exactly as it was for a year is not a problem to be solved.

When you are ready, this is what the process looks like.

What happens physically

A property that has been through something is usually a property where ordinary upkeep stopped. In our experience the practical list is almost always the same:

  • Rooms that have not been aired for weeks or months
  • Curtains closed since before the event
  • A heating system that has been off, or on constantly
  • Food, bedding and toiletries nobody has felt able to deal with
  • Every object exactly where it was on a specific day
  • Post accumulating by the door

Working through that is the first half of a clearing, and it is the half people most often cannot face alone. Not because it is difficult, but because every object in the house has something attached to it and there are a great many objects.

Having someone with you who has no personal attachment to any of it is, in practice, the single most useful part of the service.

What happens deliberately

The second half is going through the property room by room, in a fixed order, and marking the change.

What that involves: opening everything, letting air and light through the whole building, and moving through each room with attention rather than efficiency. Where a household has its own tradition — a prayer, a reading, a particular ritual — that is what we use. Where it does not, the process is simply deliberate rather than religious.

In Vastu terms, the practical corrections run alongside it: the north-east cleared and lit, weight moved to the south-west, the centre of the plan opened up. These are the same corrections we would make in any reading. They are not special to grief. They do give a clearing something concrete to leave behind.

When the property is not yours and never was

The other half of this work is commercial and residential handover: a flat where the last tenancy ended badly, a house bought from a difficult sale, a unit where the previous business failed.

The emotional weight is different but the practical position is the same: you are taking on a space arranged by someone else, for purposes that did not work, and nobody has reset it.

For a new home in particular, a clearing before you move your things in is far easier than one afterwards. An empty property can be aired, cleaned, relit and walked through properly in a day. The same property with your furniture in it is a much longer job.

If you are completing on somewhere soon, this is the one piece of timing advice worth acting on: do it between exchange and moving in, if you can.

What we will not do

We will not tell you the house is haunted. We have never said it, we would not know how to establish it, and someone grieving is exactly the wrong person to say it to.

We will not tell you a clearing resolves grief. It does not. It resolves a cold, closed, unaired house that has been left as it was, which is a real and specific thing and is worth doing on its own terms.

We will not sell you objects for this. Nothing in a clearing requires a purchase. If a reading afterwards calls for something, that is a separate conversation and a later one.

We will not pressure you on timing. If you contact us and then decide you are not ready, that is a perfectly good outcome and there is nothing to cancel.

What it costs

Quoted per property, residential or commercial.

That covers the walkthrough, the room-by-room process, and the zone corrections that come out of it as a written note afterwards. It is usually booked alongside a Vastu reading, because the two overlap considerably and doing them together is cheaper than doing them separately.

If you only do one thing

Open every window in the house for an hour, on a dry day, and let the light in.

That is not a sales line. For a property that has been shut up, it is genuinely the largest single change available, it costs nothing, and you can do it this afternoon without speaking to anyone.

Everything else can wait until you want it.

Space energy clearing — for a residential property. For a home or a unit that has been through something, and for anyone who would rather not do it alone.
