Vastu and Daylight: Where the Practice and Building Science Agree
Vastu and daylight: where the practice and building science agree
What the practice says
Vastu asks for the east and the north-east to be kept light, open and low: windows unblocked, no heavy furniture, no storage piled against the glass. It asks for the south-west to be the heaviest, most solid part of the building. And it puts the morning activities, waking and starting the day, towards the east.
Where building science agrees
Morning light. The sun rises in the east. Rooms with east-facing openings receive daylight early in the day, and it is widely accepted in lighting design that bright light in the morning helps people feel awake. Keeping that side of the house uncluttered lets the light reach further into the room.
The north-east. In the northern hemisphere the north side of a building receives soft, even light without direct sun for most of the day; artists' studios have long faced north for that reason. A north-east corner kept open gets both the gentle north light and the early east light.
Weight in the south-west. In a hot climate, the afternoon sun from the south-west is the strongest heat a building faces. Thick, heavy walls on that side absorb heat slowly and keep rooms behind them cooler; this is the same idea as thermal mass in modern passive design. A rule that says "build heavy in the south-west" is, in that climate, also a rule about staying cool.
Where the evidence is thin or absent
Not everything lines up so neatly, and it would be dishonest to pretend otherwise.
- What each zone governs. The idea that the north is the zone of money or the south-west the zone of relationships is tradition. Building science has nothing to say about it, for or against.
- Climate. The heat logic above belongs to hot regions. In the UK, the south-west light is the warm afternoon light most people want more of, not less. The practice still asks for weight there; the reason is the tradition, not British weather.
- Specific outcomes. There is no good evidence that following Vastu produces wealth, health or any other particular result, and this site does not claim it does.
Two kinds of reason, side by side
| Rule | A practical reason | The traditional reason |
|---|---|---|
| Keep the east open | Morning light | The zone of growth and connection |
| Keep the north-east light | Soft north light, early sun | The zone of clarity |
| Heavy south-west | Thermal mass against afternoon heat | The zone of stability |
| Open centre | Light and air reach the middle | The centre is kept clear |
What to take from it
Where Vastu and daylight design agree, you get two reasons for the same change, and the change is usually cheap: move the bookcase off the east window, clear the north-east corner, let the light in. Where they do not agree, the practice is honest about which reason is which.
