The 16 Vastu Zones Explained, One Zone at a Time

The sixteen Vastu zones, explained one at a time

What are the 16 zones in Vastu Shastra?

The sixteen Vastu zones are equal segments of 22.5 degrees each, measured from true north around the centre of a building's floor plate.

How it works

Each zone carries an element and a specific area of life. The system compares the quality of a zone against what actually occupies it, and a mismatch between the two is what a consultant scores as a fault. Because the zones are fixed to the compass rather than to the entrance, two competent consultants assessing the same building should reach broadly the same scoring.

What changes

You get a map of your home in which every corner has a job. Most properties have between three and six zones working against their occupants, not sixteen, so the corrective work is precise rather than wholesale.

Turn the dial. Every segment gives you its element, what it governs and how we usually correct it.

How the sixteen zones are built

Take the centre of your building's floor plate. Draw a line to true north. Then divide the full circle into sixteen equal segments of 22.5 degrees each.

That is the whole construction. Four cardinal directions, four ordinals between them, and eight intermediate zones filling the gaps. Sixteen in total.

Three things follow from this, and they matter:

It is measured from north, not from your door. Where you enter the building does not move the zones. This is the single largest difference between Vastu and most Western Feng Shui.

It is measured from the centre of the built footprint, not the centre of the plot, and not the centre of the room you happen to be standing in. In a flat, it is the centre of your flat, not of the block.

The reading has to be accurate. A compass error of eleven degrees moves you into the neighbouring zone. Everything downstream depends on this one number, so take it properly: away from steel, away from underfloor heating, away from the consumer unit, and with magnetic declination applied.

The four elements around the circle

Before the zones themselves, the pattern they sit in.

QuadrantElementWants
North and north-eastWaterLight, openness, low mass, clarity
East and south-eastFire and airActivity, warmth, morning light
South and south-westEarth and fireWeight, mass, depth, stability
West and north-westWater and airMovement, gathering, circulation

And at the centre: the Brahmasthan, the element of space. It should stay open and unloaded. In a large number of British terraces the stairs run straight through it, which cannot be changed, so what goes underneath them matters more than usual.

The sixteen zones

North — Water

Governs: wealth and new opportunities. Usual failure: heavy storage against the coolest wall of the house. Wardrobes, freezers, the filing that never got done. Correction: keep it open, light and uncluttered. Move mass out toward the south-west. Flowing water imagery supports this zone. A wealth box belongs here, above floor level, in a zone that is already clear.

North-north-east — Water

Governs: health and recovery. Usual failure: treated as leftover space between two more obvious corners. Correction: ideal for a still-water feature or a clear quartz cluster. Keep it calm and uncluttered.

North-east — Water

Governs: clarity, meditation and higher guidance. Usual failure: the most commonly ruined zone in British housing. It is the coldest corner, so it becomes the boiler cupboard, the under-stairs store, the place suitcases live. Correction: clear it completely, keep it low, and get light into it. If a boiler or fuse board is fixed here it cannot be moved, so the zone is corrected around it instead. This is the single highest-value correction in most homes.

East-north-east — Air

Governs: confidence and decisive success. Usual failure: dead space, or a dumping ground beside a door. Correction: green tones and living plants sharpen this zone.

East — Air

Governs: social connection and influence. Usual failure: heavy, dark furniture blocking morning light. Correction: maximise the morning light. Keep sightlines open. Reception areas and rooms where people gather work well here.

East-south-east — Fire

Governs: fame, authority and recognition. Usual failure: cold lighting fighting a fire zone. Correction: warm metallics and considered lighting. This is where visibility is activated.

South-east — Fire

Governs: cash flow and vitality. Usual failure: a water feature, a sink or a washing machine sitting in the fire zone. Also the reverse: the kitchen placed somewhere else entirely. Correction: the natural home of the kitchen and of active fire. Remove water where you can. Roughly one UK kitchen in eight is already here; if yours is not, the zone is corrected with warmth, colour and material instead.

South-south-east — Fire

Governs: ancestral support and legacy. Usual failure: ignored entirely. Correction: family portraits and heritage objects belong here.

South — Fire

Governs: willpower, discipline and relief from debt. Usual failure: treated as a light, airy zone when it wants the opposite. Correction: keep it weighted and grounded. Height and mass are welcome here.

South-south-west — Earth

Governs: release of negativity and unwanted patterns. Usual failure: used for storing things you are keeping, rather than things you are letting go of. Correction: the correct place for disposal, waste and what is leaving the house. Black tourmaline belongs in this zone.

South-west — Earth

Governs: relationships, stability and mastery. Usual failure: left light and empty while the north is loaded with mass. The exact inverse of what the building wants. Correction: the heaviest quadrant. Master bedroom, safe, solid materials, deeper tones, lower visual lines. If you move one thing in your home, move the weight here.

West-south-west — Earth

Governs: attraction and personal magnetism. Usual failure: over-decorated. Correction: restrained styling. Excess here tips into indulgence.

West — Water

Governs: gains, fortune and the fruits of effort. Usual failure: underused. Correction: dining and gathering spaces convert effort into reward here.

West-north-west — Air

Governs: support from others and networks. Usual failure: stagnant air, closed doors, no circulation. Correction: keep air moving. Stagnation in this zone isolates a household.

North-west — Air

Governs: banking, movement and liquidity. Usual failure: long-term archive storage in a zone that wants motion. Correction: guest rooms, finished goods, things that come and go. Money that sits still in the north-west tends not to.

North-north-west — Water

Governs: growth and abundance. Usual failure: ignored. Correction: storage of grain, stock and reserves multiplies from here. A green aventurine bowl belongs in this zone, kept holding something that moves.

How many Vastu zones does a typical home get wrong?

Between three and six, in our experience. Almost no property gets all sixteen wrong.

How it works

Faults cluster. A household that has loaded the north with storage has usually also left the south-west light, because the two mistakes are the same mistake seen from opposite ends of the building. Correcting one often improves the score of the other without any further work.

What changes

A correction schedule is therefore short and specific rather than a whole-house renovation. Most of it is moves and swaps, and the free corrections are deliberately sequenced first.

How to use this list

Do not try to correct sixteen zones. You will exhaust yourself and change nothing that matters.

Instead:

  1. Get true north right. Nothing here is worth anything if the reading is off by more than about ten degrees.
  2. Mark the centre of your floor plate and draw the sixteen segments onto a copy of your plan.
  3. Write down what each zone actually contains today. Not what the plan calls it. What is really in there.
  4. Find the mismatches. North loaded, north-east buried, south-west light. These three cover most British homes.
  5. Correct three zones, not sixteen. Start with the free changes.

What this list will not do

It will not tell you which of your zones matters most. That depends on your floor plan, your compass reading and what you are actually finding difficult, and it is the part a list on a webpage cannot do for you.

It also will not treat anything medical. Vastu is a way of arranging a building. If something you are experiencing sounds clinical, it belongs with a doctor, and we will say so rather than take the booking.

Go deeper on a single zone

Each of these has its own post:

  • The north-east: why it is the zone people ruin first
  • The south-west: why your bedroom belongs here
  • The south-east and cash flow: the kitchen and the fire zone
  • The north zone and money: where a wealth box actually goes
  • The Brahmasthan: why the centre of your home should stay empty
